We #EmbraceEquity at One10

Mar 6, 2023 | Diversity Equity and Inclusion

International Women’s Day (IWD) – March 8th – is an opportunity to pause for action.

Pause to recognize and celebrate the critical and countless achievements of women.

Act to accelerate progress on gender parity – globally.

We are proud of the diversity of our workforce – and the representation of women across our organization. For example, 57% of our Directors, VPs, SVPs, EVPs, executives, 67% of our managers, and 73% of our entire One10 team are women. The numbers count; the contributions are immeasurable.

One10 is a company that truly understands that the power is in your people, which is why we’re celebrating International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month by looking inward and recognizing the women of One10. We’re proud to share their stories and look forward to partnering every day and every month to ensure we continue to build an inclusive workplace at One10.

What is the best thing about working at One10?
The best thing about my job is that I get to CREATE! I love making magic out of the millions of ideas that run through my brain. It’s always fun to watch my ideas come to life and then see how those ideas positively impact the people around me. It makes my heart very happy!

What woman has inspired you most in your career?
My sister-in-law, Matti, is someone I look up to in a multitude of ways. She’s a mom of 5 busy kids, a successful business owner, and the happiest person you will ever meet. She has this magnetic personality and when you talk to her, you’re reminded of your worth. I’m inspired by her growth mindset and the way she goes about her life with complete humility and dedication. I’ve watched her turn a failing business into a company that now brings in millions of dollars every year—and not once have I heard her complain about the sacrifices that she and her family have had to make. She has hard days, of course, but she never lets the hard days get the best of her. She is the epitome of positivity and perseverance.
How do you #EmbraceEquity?
When my dad came out a few years ago, it shook my whole world. Although it was hard at first, I couldn’t be any more grateful for him and what he has taught me. My dad inspired a new perspective and helped me grow my understanding of love, acceptance, and advocacy. For me, this advocacy has grown beyond sexuality and gender; I strive every day to embrace, respect and stand up for all of my brothers and sisters. I commit to #EmbraceEquity by calling out my own bias, helping my friends and family become more aware of theirs, and making inclusion a regular thought, and therefore a habit.

What is the best thing about working at One10?
Working with great teams to help our clients achieve success.
What woman has inspired you most in your career?
I’ve been very fortunate to have worked with (and for) several really strong women, who have achieved personal and professional success in their own right. From retail to banking to the incentives and recognition space, each leader has, in their unique way, taught me how to excel in my positions, how to navigate internal politics, successfully manage work/life balance, and maintain personal happiness.
How do you #EmbraceEquity?
I listen to all perspectives on the teams I work on, or in interactions with clients and program participants. Age, background, geographic location, professional levels, gender, experiences – all of these offer a unique perspective and are equally considered when working on initiatives.
I continue to mentor my own grown children and other family members on embracing equity and calling out conscious and unconscious bias when observed. By fostering open discussion, we can better understand all viewpoints.

What is the best thing about working at One10?
The best part of my job is collaborating with people of all different backgrounds and in all different stages of life. Varying perspectives lead to great conversations and better solutions for our clients.
What woman has inspired you most in your career?
Someone who influenced me early in my career was Theresa, a colleague I worked with at The Palace of Auburn Hills. She taught me the benefit of sticking with a company for a long time. The background knowledge you retain in your tenure at a company is invaluable. Theresa also taught me to ride the wave of change, as you will see a lot of change when you are with a company for a long time. Working at One10 for the last seven years, I’ve seen a lot of positive change and I’ve embraced it at each turn.
How do you #EmbraceEquity?
As a parent of young kids, I’ve come to realize how important it is to respect people’s boundaries surrounding work hours and life hours. I recognize that my colleagues are all in different seasons of life and have set different boundaries based on what is important to them in their own life. I #EmbraceEquity by checking in with my colleagues to ensure they are not so overwhelmed with work that they are having to sacrifice their boundaries to get things done. When necessary, I will help to redistribute or re-prioritize work so we may all enjoy the very thing we are working for: LIFE!

Tiffany Kaplan, Sr. Performance Improvement and Training Manager, Troy, MI

What is the best thing about working at One10?
The best part of my job is to live within my element as a Change Agent. Every day, there is a different challenge, and I find effective and timely solutions for either learning or process improvement.
What woman has inspired you most in your career?
My inspiration is my Grandma Lula. Her ability to shine through the vicissitudes of life inspired me to always look for a greater purpose in every situation. She always says, “Bloom wherever you’re planted. Don’t wait for someone to prune you. When the time comes for you to be re-potted, your petals will show your worth.”
How do you #EmbraceEquity?
I am committed to #EmbraceEquity by taking a little extra time to listen thoroughly before offering a response. Empathy allows me to momentarily walk in a person’s shoes to understand them better. This understanding means I can engage with people where they are, not where I assume they are.

Katelyn Puraj, Director, Employee Experience, Troy, MI

What is the best thing about working at One10?
No two days are EVER the same. I love that what we do as HR professionals impacts employees across all levels of the organization. I enjoy knowing that I’m able to help make a difference and get to know our employees on a different level. I feel honored that they trust me.
What woman has inspired you most in your career?
I’ve had two female leaders in my career that have truly inspired me to be the type of leader and HR professional that I am today. The first taught me the importance of structure, process, consistency, and to be professionally confident. She was in the military, came from a military family, and it was shown in how she led. The second taught me patience, empathy, and kindness. She’s indirectly helped me work towards trying to break the HR stereotype of only being there to fire someone and taught me that not everything is black and white and to consider the gray. These two influential leaders in my life couldn’t have been more opposite, but have really helped me work towards what type of HR I want to be for our employees.
How do you #EmbraceEquity?
I embrace equity by remembering that each person has their own upbringing, background, beliefs, and other reasons for who they are today. Because no two situations are the same, when an employee comes to me with a problem I like to ask them, are you wanting to brainstorm a solution, or do you want me to take direct action? This helps with knowing what my purpose is, then working backwards from there. I try to remember that just because something worked well for a different employee, doesn’t mean it will work for their situation.

Beth Wilson, Manager Customer Experience, Travel and Events, Dayton, OH

What is the best thing about working at One10?
The best thing is the people at One10 that I get to interact with. They are truly a special group of people in all departments
What woman has inspired you most in your career?
My Mother and two Sisters. All three have lived a life of faith, and they are always moving forward with integrity and intention. They show constant support for family, spouse, children and grandchildren. I learned from them to trust, love, work hard, make smart decisions and be kind.
How do you #EmbraceEquity?
I commit to #EmbraceEquity by creating an inclusive world. Embracing equity is really about understanding each unique person and embracing their needs. We need to shift our focus FROM “treat others as you wish to be treated” to “treat others as they wish to be treated.”

Sarah Avrard, Employee Xperience Business Partner, New Orleans, LA

What is the best thing about working at One10?
The people! I am enjoying getting to know the incredible people of One10 and in my role, being a sounding board and advocate.
What woman has inspired you most in your career?
There are so many! One of the most inspiring women of today is Michelle Obama. Her poise through adversity, advocacy for equality through education, devotion to family, and transparency in her writing are just a few of the many things I admire about her.
How do you #EmbraceEquity?
I commit to #EmbraceEquity through my work as a CASA Advocate, which is a Court Appointed Special Advocate for children in the foster care system. Children in our foster care system have already experienced emotional, mental, and often physical trauma and don’t have access to resources that other children have. My role is to be their voice and help provide support and access to everything they need to overcome their circumstances and be successful.

Kristen Brovont, Account Director, Troy, MI

What is the best thing about working at One10?
The best thing about my job are my coworkers. I have worked with many of them and grown with them both professionally and personally.
What woman has inspired you most?
There are too many to name! If I had to name one, I would start at home with my mom. She made sure I had opportunities and experiences to help me grow as a person.
How do you commit #EmbraceEquity?
I am proud of the fact that along with my sorority sisters, we just donated $25,000 to create an endowed scholarship at Michigan Technological University. The scholarship will be awarded each year to a female student who is a member of one of the local sororities on campus – providing an opportunity for them to attain their professional goals while experiencing the support network a sorority provides.

Our sorority is no longer on campus but that bond and support that was created for us was so important, and I still benefit from it this day. We now will be able to support other women at Michigan Tech with a yearly scholarship.
